Agrasen ki Baoli / Ugrasen ki Baoli

Agrasen ki Baoli is also known as Ugrasen ki Baoli. The Baoli is a 60-meter long and 15-meter wide historical step well.  The step well has 108 steps with a sequence of imprinted passages and chambers. Agrasen ki Baoli is selected as a protected memorial by the Archaeological Survey of India.

History of Agrasen ki Baoli / Ugrasen ki Baoli

While there are no identified historical records to confirm who built Agrasen ki Baoli, it is supposed that it was initially built by the well-known Maharaja Agrasen and rebuilt by the Agrawal community in the 14th century which draws its foundation to Maharaja Agrasen. But the design of Baoli gives hints of Tughlak and Lodi architecture.

Architecture of Ugrasen ki Baoli

The Ugrasen ki Baoli has an exceptional construction which consists of three stages on both sides of the steps. Each of the stages is ruled with arched niches ( classical architecture ) at the first and second levels.

At the northern end of the Agrasen ki Baoli is a circular well with approximately 7.8 meters in diameter. It is roofed by iron grills at the top and is linked to the baoli via a shaft. In the ancient times, as the water increases in the well, it would fill up the baoli from the base to the top level.

On the west area of Agrasen Ki Baoli, over the stairs, is a small mosque. There are various stories that Agrasen Ki Baoli is a haunted place which has simply added fame to the place.

This place achieved, even more, fame following the release of Aamir Khan’s PK followed by Salman Khans Sultan, as this place was featured in both films.
