A Rare Miniature Art: Bani-Thani
In the mid 18th century, Nihal Chand, a Kishangarh artist, first painted her side portrait from how a Rajput King, Maharaja Savant Singh described her enchanting features. As the mistress, later wife of Maharaja Savant Singh, Vishnupriya adorned herself with exquisite makeup and jewelry to represent her royal stature. Her elegant style got her the name ‘Bani Thani’ (or a well-decked woman). As he was a devotee of the Hindu god Lord Krishna, the romantic stories of Krishna and his beloved, Radha, were the inspiration for most paintings created.
