History of St.Peter’s Cathedral Church, Delhi:

Till 1976, St. Mary’s Church at Hauz Khas was the only one spiritual place for Syrian Orthodox in Delhi. Due to the unfortunate separation in the Malankara church(The Malankara Church refers to the collection of Indian apostolic churches) in the early 1970s, the Syrian Orthodox Christians were left with no option but to find another place of worship.

In July 1976, Reverend Sleeba conducted the first service in a school in Defence Colony i.e. St. George school. After which everyone decided to make Parish i.e. an ecclesiastical district having its own church and member of the clergy. The parish was formed in Oct 1976 and started worshiping regularly at the Abner Memorial School. Later in Nov, it was relocated to Mater Dei School. In Nov 1977, after the registration of the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Society, they submitted an application for a plot for the construction of the Church. In Aug 1980, area of 940 Sq. yard was allocated but soon after that, all constructions were banned in the ridge belt. The late Catholicos and the diocesan bishop dint give up and continue to find a new location, as a result of which, Smt. Indira Gandhi herself instructed to allocate a new location in central Delhi. On Christmas 1989, the inaugural service was hosted at St.Peters Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Cathedral Church, Delhi.
