In a small talk with KahaJaun, Jyoti Singh the founder of label Rang Riwaaz gave insights about her label and the Gurgaon store.
How would you describe your Label Rang Riwaaz?
Rang Riwaaz can be best described as an Indian vintage-inspired designer label, our design aesthetics are primarily a fusion of the vintage elements from Indian culture and the sensibilities of the modern woman, who has now found an identity and is quite clear and confident in terms of how she wants to present herself to the world.
Which type of audience/shoppers should definitely visit the Rang Riwaaz store?
Rang Riwaaz will be an ideal designer outlet for ladies who have an appreciation for hand crafted outfits and are usually looking for a good designer team to get something customized done to their wishes suitable to their personality, position and occasion at hand. We have always aimed to understand our client’s requirements and then design to for them instead of having a large array of ready garments. Our collections usually have limited number of designs which usually serve the purpose of showcasing the latest trends and the evolution of the fashion sensibilities.
We are also a leading heritage garment restoration service provider, so old families find us really helpful while looking to restore or create heirlooms.

Our collections usually comprise of handcrafted sarees, lehengas and shawls. What is the price range of your designer outfits?
The starting range for a typical Rang Riwaaz saree will be like 12,000 and goes up to 70-80,000.
A typical hand-embroidered velvet shawl will cost around 30-40,000 and lehengas will have a starting range of 40,000.
What type of ambiance you have created at the Rang Riwaaz, Gurgaon store?
Rang Riwaaz is more of a working studio where we have the team of embroiderers, tailors and designers working in one section, while our clients are attended in the other section. As we aim to design to the specifications and satisfaction of our clients, we usually have multiple visits from our clients during the design finalization, to embroidery sampling and trial sessions. So it’s usually a busy shop floor with various garments and client projects in different stages at the same time.
How did you end up being a designer?
Now, this is where people find it a bit surprising when I tell that I am an M. S. in Finance from University of Wales, London and have worked for 13 years in core finance function for leading financial institutions like American Express, HSBC etc, however, my heart was always with arts and paintings. I always had a fascination for making art a part of our lifestyle not something limited to drawing rooms or art galleries, that is when I started with my journey of creating hand-painted sarees with elaborate paintings on pallus which I called ‘ Paintings on Pallu’. My friends would usually joke that once we are done with theses sarees we will get the pallus framed.
And as slowly the client base grew and I tried to set-up a team to meet the designer demands of my friends this group of very talented artisans gradually joined to the Rang Riwaaz family. In fact our first restoration project was a saree we did for my colleague which she was very emotional about, however, the saree had become very fragile with time and needed some repair work which was not readily available.
What is the favorite part of being a fashion designer?
My favorite part of being a designer is usually seeing the sparkle when our clients are trying their outfits, the sheer glow of happiness when they really love the outfit.
And of course, having established a Legacy Restoration service is something that I consider an achievement, where we have restored garments which carried great emotional value for our clients and this is something which we claim an Industry leadership.
Which designers have been the biggest influences on you?
The designers who have had the biggest influence would be more like Sabyasachi, as I find their designs very sensible to most of the time I discover that our designs are very similar. In fact at one instance I had designed a multicolor stripe saree, which I wore to a function before Alia Bhatt wore that design to an award function.
However, in terms of inspiration, it’s Manish Malhotra as he makes it often very clear that he is not a qualified fashion designer and still has made a name and an identity which most of the qualified designers are yet to come close to.
What aspects of the fashion industry would you like to change?
The aspect which I work towards changing in the fashion industry is fast fashion, which to my mind is the root cause of so many negatives the fashion industry is blamed for be it size zero fascination, repeat outfit taboo, a great extent of inhuman working condition for workers in the workshop for few top labels.
I ensure that our designs are sustainable and not super trendy that they don’t end up resembling star war costumes. With Rang Riwaaz we ensure that today’s bride is able to differentiate her trousseau from her mother or grandmother, but at the same time, it is enriched with fine craftsmanship which makes for an heirloom ensemble.
Our Legacy Saree Restoration division is a forbearer of our philosophy of heritage revival, where we have restored 3rd and 4th generation trousseau ensembles.
