How did you end up being a designer?
Academically I am a Ph.D. (Doctorate) in Economics but was always passionate about painting and fashion designing. After mastering all folk art paintings from traditional artisans for over 20 years, I finally decided to merge both my passions and launch a new product line of hand painted designer wear. I wanted to convert my skills of painting into wearables to revive traditionalist forms and make them more accessible.
What is the favorite part of being a fashion designer?
It gives me immense happiness when my ideas and imagination take a tangible form in the way of designing clothing. The final look of my preferred color combinations and experiments with designing is extremely satisfying. It all multiplies when my clients appreciate my work and trust me with my ideas.s
Which designers have been the biggest influences on you?
I think the younger generation of designers are doing a great job with their ideas and experiments. Largely, my ideas and designs are very personal to me as they are rooted from my painting skills. I appreciate the work out there in the world right now, but given that I am 58 and have started my own label only 2 years ago, I am not a rigid follower of any particular designer. I just keep myself updated with overall trends in the market.
What aspects of the fashion industry would you like to change?
I feel the fashion trends today are losing the traditional indian touch. As much as I appreciate and adore western wear and exchange of fashion and technology, I feel that the traditional uniqueness is fading away. I wish to revive the handcrafted culture of India. For the same reason, I make it a point that all my raw material is sourced only from handloom workers directly and that my designs reflect Indian heritage.
