About the Play
Set against the colorful backdrop of a North Indian wedding’s ladies’ sangeet—a festive gathering traditionally reserved for women—the story begins with joy and camaraderie. However, as the evening unfolds, it evolves into a profound space for unburdening, healing, and unexpected rebellion. Blending sharp wit, soulful music, and powerful performances, the production challenges audiences to reflect on the roots and realities of gender expectations, familial bonds, and the unseen connections between women across generations.
Music as Narrative
A hallmark of Ladies Sangeet is its inventive use of music. Far from being just interludes, songs in the play push the narrative forward, expressing what dialogue sometimes cannot. The musical score, curated by the distinguished Vidushi Shubha Mudgal alongside Harpreet, Anadi Nagar, and Nishant Aggarwal, intertwines humor and empathy, even while it underscores themes of patriarchy and societal norms. As Naresh notes, the production “punctuates and underlines the discourse on the male gaze… yet allows us to enjoy and reflect with a newfound awareness.”
