Aadyam Theatre, an initiative by the Aditya Birla Group, continues to celebrate the art of storytelling with its seventh season. This year’s lineup has garnered widespread acclaim, and the upcoming play, Saanp Seedhi, promises to add another compelling chapter to the season. Directed by seasoned theatre artist Shubhrajyoti Barat, the production is an Indian adaptation of Anthony Shaffer’s acclaimed thriller Sleuth.
The play is scheduled for two performances at Delhi’s Kamani Auditorium on March 29 and March 30, 2025. Following the success of Atul Kumar’s adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Purva Naresh’s take on Dostoevsky’s White Nights, Saanp Seedhi continues Aadyam’s tradition of reimagining global literary classics for Indian audiences.
A Thrilling Psychological Drama
Originally staged in 1970, Sleuth is a gripping psychological thriller that won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1971 and has inspired multiple film adaptations. Now, Saanp Seedhi reinterprets the story within an Indian context, with a script by Mismatched director Akarsh Khurrana. The play explores themes of ego, deception, and psychological warfare through the intense interplay between two characters.
Set in Goa, Saanp Seedhi follows a wealthy, retired filmmaker who invites his wife’s young lover, an ambitious architect, into his home. What begins as a seemingly civil conversation soon turns into a high-stakes mind game, where manipulation and suspense blur the lines between reality and illusion. With a talented cast featuring Kumud Mishra and Sumeet Vyas, the play promises an electrifying theatrical experience.
Director’s Vision
Shubhrajyoti Barat, a respected figure in both theatre and cinema, steps into the director’s chair for this production. Known for his performances in Article 15 and Saina, as well as popular web series like Mirzapur and Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, Barat brings his deep understanding of performance and storytelling to Saanp Seedhi.
Speaking about his directorial debut with Aadyam, Barat shared, “Aadyam Theatre has always been a space for creative experimentation. Directing Saanp Seedhi is an exciting challenge, especially because the play delves into the complexities of the human psyche with minimalistic staging. It’s a psychological battle that keeps audiences at the edge of their seats.”
