The Change of Guard Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi has been revamped to offer a grander and more immersive experience for visitors. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu witnessed the inaugural ceremony in its new format on February 16, 2025, at the Forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Starting February 22, 2025, the ceremony will be open to the public, providing a unique opportunity to witness a visual and musical spectacle against the majestic backdrop of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
What to Expect at the New Format of the Change of Guard Ceremony
The revamped ceremony now features a larger performance area and an enhanced military drill by:
✅ President’s Bodyguard (PBG) – India’s oldest regiment, known for their ceremonial cavalry and equestrian skills.
✅ Ceremonial Army Guard Battalion – Showcasing precision in drills and formations.
✅ Military Brass Band – Adding to the grandeur with stirring martial tunes.
The 30-minute event is a visual delight, beginning with the President’s Bodyguard marching from behind the Jaipur Column, mounted on their groomed and caparisoned horses, in sync with the beats of the Army Brass Band. The troops, dressed in their immaculate ceremonial uniforms, execute intricate formations with disciplined precision.
The Grand Finale
The highlight of the ceremony is an impressive equestrian display by the President’s Bodyguard, followed by the playing of the National Anthem, bringing the event to a patriotic and memorable conclusion.
Historical Significance of the Change of Guard Ceremony
This tradition, rooted in military history, dates back to ancient times when guards and sentries were periodically replaced to maintain security at palaces and forts. At Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s Bodyguard and the Ceremonial Army Guard Battalion continue this tradition, representing vigilance, discipline, and continuity in the armed forces.
