Gayatri Temple/Pap Mochani Temple – Pushkar, Rajasthan

Gayatri Temple or Pap Mochani Temple in Pushkar is one of the most famous temples out of 400 temples in the town. The Gayatri Mandir is located on a hilltop behind the Marwar bus stand. It’s a small 25mins trek to reach the Gayatri or Pap Mochani Mandir.

This is one of the best places to witness the beauty of the town and it is also famous as a sunrise/sunset point in Pushkar.

History of Gayatri or Pap Mochani Temple, Pushkar:

Brahma was to perform the Yagya with his wife Savitri, at the designated time of yagya, goddess Saraswati was late. So Lord Brahma asked Indra to find a suitable girl who he can marry and finish the sacrifice(yagya). Indra found a milkmaid’s daughter(gujjar), purified her and named her Gayatri. Lord Brahma married her and completed the yagya.

When Saraswati arrived, she saw Gayatri sitting with Brahma. Goddess Saraswati got angry and cursed Brahma and everyone present there. Then Goddess Gayatri diluted the curse and gave boon to everyone. That’s why she is also called Pap Mochani(goddess of redemption).

It is believed that by visiting Goddess Gayatri or Pap Mochani temple in Pushkar, one can free himself from all the sins & killings. It is said that Legend from Mahabharata, Ashwatthama came to Pap Mochani Temple to seek Salvation.

The Gayatri Temple is located on a hilltop near Pushkar lake. To reach the temple one has to trek for 25-30 mins.

You can visit the Gayatri Temple anytime. The best time to visit the temple would be at the time of sunrise.
