The 18th Edition of the Kathakar International Storytelling Festival Returns to Delhi: Dates, Times, and Ticket

The much-anticipated Kathakar International Storytelling Festival is back for its 18th edition and is all set to take place from January 31st to February 2nd at Sunder Nursery, Nizamuddin, Delhi. Organized by Babaji Music, Nivesh, and HHatch in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, and Delhi Tourism, the festival is a celebration of the age-old art of storytelling, which has been steadily fading in the age of technology and digital media.

The festival brings together professional storytellers from around the world, including countries like Mongolia, England, Sierra Leone, Poland, Australia, Colombia, Estonia, Palestine, Israel, and India, who will captivate audiences with their enchanting stories. The festival aims to demonstrate that storytelling is a universal tradition that binds cultures together.

A Star-Studded Lineup and Rich Cultural Offerings

Union Minister of Culture, Sh. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, will inaugurate the festival on 31st January, making it an even more momentous occasion. The event promises a one-of-a-kind experience for the people of Delhi as it hosts a series of storytelling sessions, musical acts, and cultural performances from various countries.

One of the highlights of the festival is its diverse range of storytellers. Expect to hear stories from India’s rich oral traditions, such as Pandvani, Dastan-goi, Qissebazi, Powada, and Kerala shadow puppetry, among many others. There will also be Caribbean ghost stories, Greek mythology, and Australian First World stories, making the festival a cultural melting pot.

Expanding Horizons: The Kathakar Tour

This year, the Kathakar festival will embark on a tour to four cities—Delhi, Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Himachal Pradesh, due to repeated requests from audiences. Mohit Chauhan, who is not only the patron of the festival but also the Cultural Ambassador of Mongolia in India, shared his excitement about the festival’s expansion. He said, “We will share not just the art of storytelling but also the ancient stories spread across India, whether through mythological scriptures, folklore, literature, or word of mouth.”

The festival has been a powerful platform for dying oral art forms in India and has reached over 1,50,000 adults and children since its inception. The event is particularly focused on bringing storytelling to underprivileged children, including those with disabilities and children undergoing treatment for cancer.

Noteworthy Sessions and Performances

This year’s festival will include exclusive sessions by Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali, celebrated music composer and singer Mohit Chauhan, and the iconic singer Lucky Ali. A unique session titled “Kissey, Kahani aur Cinema” will be moderated by Prarthana Gahilote, the Festival Director.

Other musical highlights include a Sufi night featuring AR Rahman’s KM Conservatory, Rajasthani folk music by Kutle Khan, and the introduction of Bhupinder Babbal, renowned for his folk music, who will discuss and perform alongside festival-goers. Kathakar will also present a Sajid and Imtiaz Ali Retrospective, featuring the screening of films Laila Majnu and Chamkila, inaugurated by Sajid Ali, a well-known film director and writer.

Additionally, expect international storytellers such as Nell Phoenix (United Kingdom), Usifu Jalloh (UK/Sierra Leone), Polina Tšerkassova (Estonia), and Nama Tel Sur (Israel), to bring their unique stories and experiences to the stage.

A Unique Dialogue Between Two Music Legends

One of the most intriguing sessions will be the conversation between two music legends—Lucky Ali and Mohit Chauhan. These two iconic voices of Indi-pop and Bollywood will share the stage, reminiscing about their journeys and how their music evolved over the years. Their shared experiences will offer insights into songwriting, music, and storytelling, showcasing the deep connection between the two art forms.
